How to Cut, Connect, and Install LED Light Strips?

LED light strips have revolutionized home lighting, providing flexibility and versatility. These strips can be installed in various locations, illuminating areas that are typically left in shadow by ceiling lights, such as cabinets and kitchen worktops. Moreover, LED strips offer the perfect solution for creating mood lighting, as they come in a wide range of RGB colors and color temperatures. Some even have remote control capabilities, allowing you to easily adjust the lighting to suit different purposes.

Can You Cut LED Light Strips?

One of the greatest advantages of LED strip lighting is its adaptability. In most cases, LED strips can be cut to fit your specific needs. Look for a cutting line or scissor icon on the strip, indicating the safe cutting points without damaging the circuitry. These points are usually marked by a pair of copper dots at the end of each LED unit.

How Do You Cut LED Strip Lights?

Cutting LED strip lights is a simple process that requires only a pair of scissors. Follow the cutting line or cut between the pair of copper dots at the end of each LED unit. It’s crucial to disconnect the power before cutting. Make sure to cut in a straight line to avoid damaging the connection, ensuring the lights work properly when connected to another strip.

Can You Connect LED Light Strips Together?

Yes, you can easily connect LED light strips together. This is useful when you need to go around corners or obstacles or if you want to connect multiple reels for larger spaces. While soldering is an option, not everyone has the necessary equipment. In that case, you can purchase connectors along with your LED strip.

How Do You Connect LED Light Strips Together?

There are multiple ways to connect LED light strips together. You can use a soldering iron if you’re comfortable with soldering. However, if soldering isn’t your forte, there are connectors available that are easier to use.

To connect LED strip lights to a mains power source, use a driver. Ensure that the red and black wires match the polarity of the driver. Repeat the same process to connect the driver to the mains power, and you’ll have a complete connection.
To connect two or multiple LED strip lights, you can solder them using wires. Follow these steps:

Scrape off the plastic cover from the end of the LED strip to expose the copper dots.
Clear any debris using a blade.
Use a soldering iron to create small metal puddles on top of the copper dots, ensuring they cover them completely.
Repeat this process on both ends of the strips you’re connecting.
Cut connecting wires to the required length, leaving half an inch extra on each end. Strip the casing off the ends of the wires.
Twist and coat each exposed wire with solder.
Match and attach the wires to the strip, ensuring the black wire connects to the ‘-‘ icon and the red wire connects to the ‘+’ icon.
Reheat the puddles on the LED strip and hold the wire in place until it solidifies.
Repeat this process for each wire, and you’re ready to use the connected strips.

If your LED strip lights are remote-controlled, you’ll need to connect them using a receiver between the LED tape and the driver. This allows you to change color temperatures or RGB colors using a remote or a mobile app.
Connecting LED strip lights to a light switch requires expert hardwiring knowledge. It involves matching the wires on the lights to the corresponding wiring in the switch. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult a professional.
When using RGB LED strip lights, the soldering process is the same as with standard LED strips. However, instead of a black and red wire, you’ll have black, blue, green, and red wires. Connect the black wire to the ‘+’ icon, the blue wire to ‘B’, the green wire to ‘G’, and the red wire to ‘R’. Alternatively, you can use an RGB connector if you don’t have a soldering iron.
To connect LED strip lights to a battery, use a driver between the LED strip lights and the power source. Ensure the polarity of the wires matches the battery for a secure connection.
If you prefer not to solder, you can find quick LED strip connectors that make the installation process even easier. Make sure these connectors match the width of your LED tape. Open the covers at the side of the connector, insert the exposed ends of the tape into the fastening clips, ensure the polarity matches, and close the clips to protect the connection. Connectors can also be used to attach your LED strip lights to the power source via a driver. If using multiple strips, connect all of them to the driver to prevent dimming between strips.
Connecting your driver to a plug requires knowledge of plug wiring. If you’re unsure, it’s advisable to consult a professional to ensure a secure connection.

How to Install LED Strip Lights?

Installing LED strip lights doesn’t require an electrician. Starter kits are available to make the process as easy as possible. Before you start, plan accordingly. Ensure that the LED strips are the correct length for the space and that you have easy access to a power source.

The LED strips are typically backed with adhesive. First, clean the surface where you’ll be sticking the lights to remove dust and ensure it’s dry. Peel off the adhesive covering and press the strips inch by inch onto the surface, making sure no air bubbles form.

To install LED strip lights on the ceiling, place them behind a lip or groove to maximize the lighting effect without showing the strip itself. Attaching the strip to the edge of a drop-down ceiling or at the edge of a molded carving works well.
On carpeted stairs, it’s best to attach the strips to smooth and stable surfaces like ceramic tiling, marble, wood, plastic, or metal. If you need to attach them to a carpeted surface, use small plastic fixing clips to screw the strips into the stair overhang.
Installing RGB LED strip lights follows the same process as regular LED strips, but they may require additional space depending on their width.
To install LED strip lights in the kitchen, place the strip underneath shelves, cabinets, or worktops for an effective lighting display.
When installing LED strip lights inside cabinets or shelves, position them under the edge of the worktop surface. Use flexible connectors for corners if necessary.
If your LED strip lights come with a remote, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to connect the remote controller.
For outdoor or bathroom installations, ensure your LED strips are waterproof. Look for an IP rating of at least 65 to protect them from splashes and prevent damage to the LEDs.
Before installing strip lights in the shower, ensure the bathroom is completely dry. Wet surfaces will prevent the adhesive from sticking properly. Waterproof strips are essential for areas exposed to water regularly.
